Alternatives to AWS EC2
Google Compute Engine is the alternative for GCP-native teams that need tighter integration with BigQuery, Vertex AI, and Google's data platform. EC2's broader service ecosystem and larger community don't offset the cross-cloud overhead for committed GCP organizations.
Azure Virtual Machines is the natural choice for Microsoft-ecosystem organizations with existing Azure Active Directory, Office 365, and .NET workloads. EC2's advantage disappears when the team is already invested in the Azure control plane and DevOps tooling.
DigitalOcean Droplets cost 30–50% less than EC2 for equivalent compute with much simpler setup and pricing. The right step-down for teams that don't need EC2's ecosystem depth and want predictable flat-rate billing without reserved instance commitments.
Fly.io is the step-down for teams that want a platform abstraction over raw VMs—global edge deployment with simpler configuration than managing EC2 autoscaling groups. Better for applications that benefit from running close to users without EC2's infrastructure overhead.
